Why you might need Non Standard Motor Insurance:

There are a number of reasons you may need non standard motor insurance:

  • A Motoring or non motoring conviction. If you have received a drink driving or drug driving conviction or have a non motoring conviction, you may find it very difficult to get any motor cover.
  • The type of car or van you are driving: Insurance for Japanese imports, high value vehicles are high powered cars can all be difficult to insure.
  • Lack of driving experience: You may be a first time driver or have been out of the country for a number of years.
  • Adverse claims experience: You may be unlucky enough to have a number of claims in recent years.
  • Forced cancellation: You may have had your policy cancelled by an insurer due a non disclosure or payment default.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the cost of non standard insurance ?

Non standard insurance policies tend to be more expensive then a standard policy due to what the insurer will view as an increased risk. There are some ways to reduce your premium:

  • Newer vehicle: A number of insurers do not quote for vehicles over 10 years of age, so keeping it within 10 years will help.
  • Higher excess: If you are prepared to pay the first part of a claim yourself (up to €2000) there are non standard insurers that will offer you a discount or cover that wouldn’t be available otherwise.
  • Driving licence: If you have a provisional licence try and get your full licence as soon as possible. If you have an international licence, apply for your Irish licence. If you have a conviction make sure you have all the details of same.
  • Find previous driving experience: If you have been insured in the past, even a number of years ago, it is worth getting written confirmation of same. If you are leaving a country to return to Ireland, make sure to bring your driving experience with you.
  • Know the law and when your conviction is spent: Under certain circumstances, your driving conviction can be deemed spent and therefore does not need to be disclosed to the insurance company. It is important to know if this is the case.
  • Don’t compound issues: If you have a driving conviction, don’t buy a high powered car for at least a number of years. Having one issue such as a conviction is enough without purposely adding a high powered car and reducing your options further. Get back on the road for a number of years and then worry about the type of vehicle you are driving.
  • Security: If you have a high value car that is attractive to thieves, look to have an immobilizer or tracker installed.

All these will help, as will talking to a specialist non standard broker such as non standard insurance.
